A tense morning scene unfolded off the Greek island of Crete when a ferry and a cargo ship collided in Souda Bay. Footage of the moment of contact spread quickly online, and authorities promptly halted the vessels’ departures.
What we know so far
Shortly after 10 a.m. local time, the ferry “Eliros,” departing the port and owned by Anek Lines, made contact with the cargo ship “Iosif K,” which was entering the bay at the time.
According to initial information, no injuries have been reported and no marine pollution has been observed.
Following the collision, both ships returned to port. They have been barred from sailing until competent services complete inspections and issue certificates confirming their seaworthiness.
