U.S. denies reports of mass troop withdrawal from Europe
Whitaker told a Brussels defence conference that reports of a mass pullout of 25,000–40,000 troops are false and the Pentagon has not finalized plans.
U.S. ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker dismissed recent reports that Washington plans a large-scale withdrawal of forces from Europe, telling a Brussels defense forum that the claims were untrue.
Whitaker spoke at a defense conference organized by the Euronews network in Brussels and sought to reassure allied capitals about American commitments on the continent.
Reassurance amid reporting of a wide pullback
“Those reports are false,” Whitaker said, adding that “the Pentagon's plan is not yet finalized.”
The remarks came after NBC, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reported in mid-September that Washington intended to pull as many as 25,000 to 40,000 troops out of Europe. That report said Washington is conducting a review of its military presence to ensure NATO moves decisively toward taking primary responsibility for conventional defence in Europe.
Whitaker attempted to calm partner governments, saying, “We have consistently stated that we will remain committed to Europe.” He emphasized that the United States continues consultations within NATO as any long-term posture decisions are considered.
