Vincent Kompany discharged from hospital; cause of collapse identified
Sporting director Max Eberl says Kompany will continue recovery at home after tests found irritation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital five days after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training centre, the club’s sporting director said. Medical examinations identified irritation of the meninges — the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord — as the cause of the episode, a condition that can trigger painful muscle spasms.
Max Eberl: Kompany will recover at home
Max Eberl told ARD that Kompany has already been allowed to return home to continue his recovery. "I think this is the biggest and best news for all of us. It has been determined what caused the condition. It was precisely irritation of the meninges that led to the incident last Friday. He has already been allowed to go home, where he will continue his recovery. In his case, that means rest and medication therapy," Eberl said.
The 40-year-old Belgian was taken to hospital last Friday after he became unwell while watching a training session of Bayern’s second team. German media reports say he lost consciousness and experienced convulsions when he fell, dislocating his shoulder in the process. No concrete date has been set for his return to work.
In Kompany’s absence, assistant coach Aron Dans took charge of the first team and was on the bench for Bayern’s wins over Freiburg and Magdeburg. Eberl expressed confidence that Kompany will return to the touchline, but emphasised the coach will be given all the time needed to recover. "From the very beginning we have been talking about weeks," he added.
Kompany became Bayern’s head coach in 2024 and has since led the club to two Bundesliga titles. Before joining the German giants he worked as a coach at Anderlecht and Burnley, and as a player he spent 11 years at Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles.
