North Macedonia adopts long-term strategy for mineral resources 2026–2046

The Government of North Macedonia has adopted a long-term strategy for geological exploration and the sustainable use of mineral resources covering 2026–2046, the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources announced. The document sets priorities for modern exploration, responsible extraction and creation of conditions for long-term investment in the sector.

Key priorities and aims

The strategy aims to convert the country's geological potential into investments, industrial development, jobs and greater added value for the domestic economy. It identifies metals and industrial stones as primary assets: lead, zinc, copper, gold, antimony and nickel, together with marble, travertine, granite and limestone.

"Macedonia has a diverse geological potential, which includes lead, zinc, copper, gold, antimony and nickel, as well as marble, travertine, granite and limestone. One of the main priorities is that a larger share of the economic value be created in the country. That implies a stronger link between mining and domestic manufacturing, development of processing and other industrial capacities and the application of modern technologies. Improved geological exploration will allow more precise determination of the potential and timely planning of future investments. This opens space for new business activities and strengthening domestic production capacities," the Ministry said.

The strategy also raises environmental protection, transparency and safeguards for the public interest as cross-cutting requirements, and it aligns with European policies, including the European Critical Raw Materials Act, opening opportunities for greater inclusion of North Macedonia in European industrial supply chains.

The document was prepared through expert cooperation between the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) and the Ministry, with contributions from specialists and consultations with relevant institutions and the professional public. It was adopted by the Government on the Ministry's proposal and establishes a framework for geological research and mining until 2046.

"With this document, the mineral wealth is created not only to be a subject of exploitation, but a driver of domestic industry, investment and long-term economic development, with responsible management and preservation of the environment," the Ministry added. The strategy is intended to attract sustained investments while imposing higher standards on environmental performance and public oversight.
