On October 4, 2026, the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Skopje announced the opening of an investigation after police found weapons, explosives and ammunition in the apartment of a 33-year-old Skopje resident.

“During a search of the suspect's home, police discovered and seized a larger quantity of weapons, ammunition and explosive material prohibited for civilians — one M75 hand grenade fitted with metal balls about 2 mm in diameter with shrapnel effect, a total of 240 bullets of various calibers, a Crvena Zastava pistol in 7.65 mm caliber with one magazine holding seven bullets, a Beretta pistol with a magazine containing six bullets, as well as around 7 grams of marijuana. A motorcycle key was also found in the apartment for which there is operational information that it was used in the commission of the criminal offense of murder,” the prosecutor's office said.

Charges and legal basis

The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office issued an order to conduct an investigative procedure against the 33-year-old on suspicion of several criminal offenses: unauthorized manufacture, possession, mediation and trade in weapons or explosive materials under Article 396(5) in relation to paragraphs 3 and 1, and unauthorized production and placing on the market of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors under Article 215(1) of the Criminal Code.

Authorities say the volume and nature of the seized items prompted the prosecutor to ask the court to impose the strictest preventive measure — pre-trial detention.

In its detention proposal, the prosecutor emphasized both the risk of flight and the danger that the suspect might continue committing criminal acts, describing those considerations as grounds for custody.

The investigation is ongoing. Prosecutors and police have not released the suspect’s identity; no court decision on detention had been published at the time of the announcement.
