More border entries in a Montenegro weekend than the country’s population
632,766 passenger entries and 146,147 vehicle entries were recorded over one weekend, exceeding Montenegro’s 2023 census population of 623,633.
Montenegro recorded an unusually large influx of people at its border crossings over a single weekend: authorities logged 632,766 passenger entries and 146,147 vehicle entries during the two-day period.
Entries exceeded the country's population
The total number of passenger entries over those two days surpassed Montenegro’s entire population recorded in the 2023 census, which stands at 623,633 residents.
The heaviest traffic was registered at the land crossing Dobrakovo, on the border with Serbia, where 80,694 passengers passed through. Other major entry points recorded the following passenger numbers: Debeli Brijeg 78,800; Sukobin and Muriqani 72,937; Dračenovac 67,155; and Božaj 44,283.
Air and sea gateways also saw significant flows: Podgorica Airport handled 35,823 passengers, Tivat Airport 32,532, and the port of Kotor 31,064.
Long queues developed at some crossings, with lines over 20 kilometres reported at Karasovići and Debeli Brijeg on the Croatia–Montenegro route. In several places travellers waited more than 10 hours in high temperatures, prompting activation of the Civil Protection Headquarters of the Municipality of Konavle.
Local residents provided water and access to toilets for stranded travellers, and several cases were reported in which passengers required medical assistance.
