German police and customs officers seized about 300 kilograms of cocaine that was hidden inside crates of bananas at a wholesale market in Nuremberg, southern Germany.

The case came to light on Monday, 2 November, after market staff alerted police about an attempted break-in. While checking goods that had been prepared for delivery to shops, an employee noticed that one of the banana crates felt unusually heavy.

The Bavarian Criminal Investigation Office estimated the street value of the seized drugs at around 20 million euros. The cocaine was discovered packed inside the banana crates that were to be distributed from the market.

German police and customs carried out the seizure at the wholesale site in Nuremberg. Authorities have not provided additional details about arrests or the origin of the shipment.
