46-year-old driver from Arachinovo indicted in shortened procedure over Radishani collision
Prosecutors say the driver turned left without yielding, cutting off a Kawasaki motorcycle; the rider, 19-year-old Nikola Makrachevski, died at the scene and a second motorist was injured.
The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Skopje announced that a 46-year-old man from Arachinovo has been charged in a shortened criminal procedure for his role in the crash near Radishani that left a motorcyclist dead. Prosecutors say the defendant, who was driving a SEAT Altea, failed to provide assistance after the collision and left the scene.
According to the office, the collision happened at the junction with 18th Street, an intersection without traffic signs. The defendant turned left and did not yield to vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, which caused him to cut the path of a Kawasaki motorcycle that was proceeding straight from the other direction.
Prosecutor's reconstruction of the sequence
“To avoid a direct collision with the car, the motorcyclist moved left, crossing into the lane intended for traffic in the opposite direction. There, with the front part of the motorcycle, he struck directly into an Alfa Romeo coming from the opposite side. From the force of the impact the motorcyclist, Nikola Makrachevski, was thrown out, fell onto the roadway and sustained severe injuries from which he died, and the driver of the Alfa Romeo sustained lighter injuries. The suspect, instead of providing assistance to the injured, after the accident left the scene,” the Prosecutor's Office said.
The prosecutor proposed precautionary measures for the defendant: a ban on leaving his residence, an obligation to report to the court, temporary seizure of his travel document and confiscation of his driver's licence.
Police said that, after the inspection and from secured video footage at the scene, they established that a third vehicle also took part in the collision between the Alfa Romeo and the Kawasaki. The 19-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene and the body was sent for autopsy by order of the public prosecutor. The other driver received medical treatment at PHI "St. Naum Ohridski" for injuries.
Authorities have detained the third participant in the Radishani crash that claimed the life of the 19-year-old rider.
