Near brawl at Evzoni: drivers clashed over cutting in line

Drivers who waited for hours to leave Greece and enter North Macedonia clashed with other men at the Evzoni border crossing — a scene captured on video last night. The footage shows vehicles stopped in a queue, and some drivers getting out and beginning to shout because of attempts to cut ahead in line.

Nerves and soaring temperatures raise tensions

The verbal dispute quickly escalated into an intense argument, with voices of Serbian and North Macedonian nationals heard on the footage. At one point the situation appeared it could turn into a physical confrontation, but so far there are no reports of injuries.

The cause of the anger was drivers attempting to cut ahead in line, which sparked frustration among those who had been waiting for hours in the queue. Several people got out of their cars and gathered around the disputed vehicles, while others filmed with mobile phones.

Today the Evzoni and Bogorodica border crossings were again burdened with kilometer-long queues of vehicles, and temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. At Tabanovce the wait was about one hour, and at Bogorodica approximately half an hour.

Authorities warned drivers to drive carefully due to the heat and the increased risk of rockfalls on some stretches and to allow for longer waiting times when traveling to and from the border crossings.
