Zaharieiv announces expert team after Shtip mother left in wheelchair following cesarean
The Clinical Hospital Shtip director says the postoperative course was orderly and an expert review and ministry inspection have been launched after the family accused medical error.
Zlatko Zahariev, director of Clinical Hospital Shtip, spoke publicly about the case of 19-year-old mother Stanka Mihajlova, who is using a wheelchair after a cesarean delivery at the hospital.
Zaharieiv said the immediate postoperative course was orderly and that the patient "was discharged in good general condition."
According to the timeline provided by the hospital, some time after discharge Mihajlova returned to the regional hospital with pronounced weakness in her lower extremities. Subsequent examinations reportedly identified a change in the spinal canal at a high thoracic level.
Expert team and inspection ordered
Zaharieiv stated that he does not believe the woman’s condition can be linked to the administration of spinal anesthesia during the cesarean section. He also announced that an expert team will be formed to review the case and added that "if medical error is established there will be responsibility from the personnel and from me."
The Ministry of Health has issued an order for an extraordinary inspection of all health facilities where Mihajlova received care. The patient, a mother of two minor children, and her family have accused medical staff of an error in treatment.
