Zakharova warns Russia may target British military facilities in and outside Ukraine

Russia warned on Thursday that it could strike British military facilities both inside Ukraine and beyond its borders as a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory carried out with long-range British cruise missiles. The statement was made by Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"We have repeatedly warned that all British military facilities and equipment in Ukraine and beyond its borders could be the target of a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory carried out with British weapons," Zakharova said.

Escalation warnings and recent accusations

The warning came one day after Moscow accused Kyiv of launching a British-made Storm Shadow missile at a shopping centre in the Russian city of Donetsk, an attack Russia says wounded civilians, including children.

The Kremlin also said three days earlier that the United Kingdom was "adding fuel to the fire" after London announced it would permit Kyiv access to classified technology intended to help Ukraine begin domestic production of Storm Shadow-type cruise missiles.

France has already agreed to license the technology for European missile programmes, further broadening the pool of states involved in the transfer of related know‑how and components.

Zakharova's remarks underline Moscow's message that further support for Ukrainian strike capabilities risks widening the conflict, raising diplomatic tensions between Russia, the UK and Western partners while increasing the danger of military escalation on the ground.
