€64,250 confiscated at Tabanovce after illegal transfer attempt
Authorities found €124,250 during a search at Tabanovce; €64,250 were confiscated after a discrepancy in the declaration.
Customs officers at the Tabanovce border crossing stopped an attempt to illegally transfer €64,250 during an inspection of a car with German licence plates driven by a Greek national.
Inspection and legal steps
On entry to the country the passenger declared he was carrying €60,000 and presented a form issued when entering the Republic of Serbia. Authorities say doubts about that declaration prompted a more thorough check.
Customs officers, working together with a Frontex police officer, carried out a detailed search and uncovered a total of €124,250 hidden in the vehicle.
Under the Law on Foreign Exchange Operations, the declared €60,000 was returned to the passenger, while the remaining €64,250 was confiscated. A misdemeanor procedure was initiated against the person before the competent court.
The Customs Administration also reported that, since the start of the year, the authorities have uncovered 30 cases of illegal transfer of foreign currency. In those incidents the amounts seized total €820,675, £141,300 and $35,000 Australian dollars.
