Reconstruction begins at University Clinic for Physical Medicine — Skopje

The reconstruction of the University Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation – Skopje has begun, funded by a grant worth 92.7 million denars excluding VAT, the Ministry of Finance announced. The works aim to improve conditions for patients and staff and to substantially raise the energy efficiency of the clinic's facilities.

A grant agreement was signed between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health to implement the sub-project "Reconstruction of the University Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation – Skopje with energy efficiency measures." The sub-project will be executed through the Project Unit at the Ministry of Finance, using grant funds provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development – World Bank and an investment grant from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).

"These activities are part of Component 1b of the Project, which covers reconstruction with energy efficiency measures of central government buildings and public health institutions. The reconstruction will include eight interconnected buildings, with a total heated area of 7,247 square metres. With the investment the Clinic will receive modern energy-efficient solutions, better and more functional working conditions for the medical staff and higher-quality conditions for the stay, treatment and care of patients," said the Ministry of Finance.

Planned interventions and technical scope

Planned construction works include applying thermal insulation to façades and roof structures, replacing old joinery with new energy-efficient windows and doors, repairing parts of the buildings and sanitary facilities, and replacing existing lighting with modern energy-efficient LED systems.

"Within the reconstruction, the heating and cooling systems will also be modernized through the installation of high-efficiency heat pumps and fan coil units. This will replace the current oil-based heating system, which will contribute to reducing energy consumption, lower operating costs for the institution and reduce negative environmental impact. The implementation of the project is expected to significantly improve the energy characteristics of the clinic, as well as to create a more modern, more functional and higher-quality health environment for patients and medical staff," the Ministry of Finance added.

The reconstruction is presented as another major investment in modernizing public healthcare infrastructure and forms part of broader measures to improve energy efficiency in public buildings, ensure more efficient use of public funds and provide higher-quality public services to citizens.
