Reconstruction begins at Delchevo border crossing
Customs Administration and EU funding under IPA III will finance rebuilding of buildings, surfaces, utilities and a new digital weighbridge.
On 29 August 2026 at 14:30 the mayor of Delchevo, Ivan Gotcevski, announced the start of a reconstruction project at the Delchevo border crossing — a development he described as a major investment for the municipality and the wider eastern region.
Scope of the works
The programme, carried out by the Customs Administration with financial support from the European Union through the IPA III instrument, includes several infrastructure and equipment upgrades:
- reconstruction of the administrative building at the Delchevo border crossing;
- reconstruction of the goods (cargo) customs building;
- rehabilitation of asphalt surfaces and underground utility lines;
- installation of a new digital weighbridge for freight vehicles.
The contract for the construction works was signed in July 2026, enabling teams to begin preparations and on-site activities.
Local officials emphasised that the Customs Administration will lead implementation while the EU funding is provided under IPA III. Mayor Gotcevski publicly thanked Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, the Ministry of Transport and Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski, and the European Union for their support.
"Delchevo will receive a more modern, more functional and better organized border crossing — one of the most important gateways to Bulgaria and the European Union. This is a significant investment for the economy, transport, tourism and for all citizens who use the crossing on a daily basis," the mayor said.
Authorities expect the upgrades to shorten processing times, improve traffic flow for commercial vehicles and enhance the station's capacity to handle cross-border trade and tourism, benefits they say will extend across the eastern part of the country.
