Stenje beach on Prespa in decline; residents clear access themselves

Once among the most attractive beaches on Prespa Lake, the shore at Stenje has fallen into neglect and is now being cleared by villagers so visitors can reach the water.
From a 2015 makeover to overgrown paths
The beach was arranged in 2015 with sand and additional facilities and later drew many domestic and foreign tourists. Locals say that today the promenade is overgrown and parts of the beach are left unmaintained.
Residents report they have had to remove debris and vegetation themselves to open access for bathers. A persistent problem, they add, is that street lighting does not work properly and portions of the beach and promenade stay in complete darkness at night.
"People pay for street lighting, and at night it's dark. They want tourists, but they haven't invested a denar," local residents say.
Rather than new investments or amenities that would attract visitors, the community is asking at minimum for basic upkeep — a clean beach, a passable promenade and functioning lighting — to prevent further decline of a once-popular destination.
