Taiwan closes schools and offices in south as Typhoon "Saudel" approaches
Schools and offices closed in southern Taiwan as heavy rain and rail disruptions precede the expected approach of Typhoon "Saudel".

Heavy rain forced authorities in southern Taiwan to close schools and government offices as the island prepares for Typhoon "Saudel", which forecasters say could pass near northern Taiwan later this week.
Rail services disrupted; some residents told to stay home
Rail operators announced that express trains will be stopped, while services for other trains will run or be suspended depending on changing weather conditions. The downpours have already caused delays and operational problems on key rail lines in the south.
Local officials issued advisories in certain districts advising residents not to leave their homes unless necessary, urging people to avoid flooded streets and unstable slopes.
Taiwan's meteorological service said the typhoon, currently moving toward the southern part of the Japanese archipelago, Okinawa, is expected to pass near northern Taiwan on Friday.
Emergency and municipal agencies in affected areas said they are monitoring rivers and landslide-prone zones, and called on the public to follow official notices and prepare emergency supplies as the situation develops.
