Reconstruction of building housing the Inspectorate for Environment completed — €8.7 million spent
Work finished six years after the 2020 fire that burned the inspectorate’s offices; tarpaulins blocking pedestrian access removed.
Reconstruction of the building that houses the Inspectorate for Environment has been completed after works costing €8.7 million. The structure was the former Commercial Bank and was damaged by a fire in 2020.
Six years after the blaze
The 2020 blaze occurred while the building hosted the Inspectorate for Environment, the Ministry of European Affairs and the state news agency MIA. "The offices of the Inspectorate for Environment burned in the fire," according to official reports.
Six years on — in 2026 — the renovation has been finalised and the temporary tarpaulins that had been blocking the pedestrian path and access to neighbouring buildings have been removed. The work restored the building’s exterior and cleared the public walkways that had been obstructed.
No additional details about the funding sources or the precise schedule of works were released with the completion notice. The €8.7 million total spent on the project was confirmed as part of the completion statement.
The building will continue to host the Inspectorate for Environment. Authorities say the reconstruction ends a chapter that began with the 2020 fire and reopens the surrounding pedestrian route.
