Zelensky: Russian strikes hit Kyiv's energy and residential sites, casualties reported

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a Russian ballistic missile strike struck a key energy facility that supplies Kyiv with heat and electricity, and that the attacks overnight caused deaths and injuries.

According to Zelensky, Russian forces launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones and munitions during the night, targeting the energy sector and critical infrastructure in Kyiv, Kyiv region and Kharkiv.

"The targeted Russian ballistic missile strike was precisely on the energy sector"

"The targeted Russian ballistic missile strike was precisely on the energy sector, for which the American president declared a ceasefire. The strike was absolutely deliberate and indicative in its scale — there has never been such demonstrative disregard from Russia toward America," Zelensky wrote on social media.

The president added that at least 600,000 people are without electricity and that outages could be wider. He said there is "significant damage to facilities and equipment in 26 elements of our power system and in four facilities of the oil and gas complex."

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said a rocket hit a residential building, killing two people and injuring 21. Klitschko said 16 of the wounded were hospitalized, four in serious condition. He later reported that additional strikes in the morning caused further damage, with one more person hospitalized and one killed.

The State Emergency Service reported damage to a non-residential building, a private house and an abandoned building in the Kyiv area. Air-raid sirens were also sounded in parts of western Ukraine, including Lviv, Volyn and Ivano-Frankivsk.

The strikes on energy infrastructure came days after U.S. President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil facilities. Zelensky replied that he would be prepared to accept an energy truce if Russia stopped attacking Ukraine's power grid; Trump later announced that an energy truce had been reached between Russia and Ukraine.
