Zelensky at an Impasse: Fedorov Rejects Offer to Return to Government

The political storm in Kyiv is intensifying after former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov rejected the latest offer from President Volodymyr Zelensky to rejoin the government cabinet. According to sources from the Financial Times, the head of state's attempt to calm the public by bringing back the popular politician with an extended mandate ended unsuccessfully. Senior Ukrainian officials reveal that Fedorov insists on returning solely to the helm of the Ministry of Defense, refusing any alternative positions.

This development follows a wave of dissatisfaction that spilled onto the streets after Fedorov's unexpected dismissal. The demonstrations, which initially started in the capital last week, have already spread to at least sixteen Ukrainian cities. Citizens are not only demanding the return of the innovative minister but also a complete change in military strategy at this critical stage of the conflict with Russia, which has lasted for more than four years. Protesters believe that Fedorov's innovative approach is crucial for the future course of the war.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, whose tactical disagreements with Fedorov are well known to the public, has also found himself at the center of criticism. The pressure on Zelensky to replace the controversial general and bring in younger military personnel is constantly growing. Veteran associations are particularly vocal in these demands. Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a military veteran and one of the protest organizers, warned via the X social network that keeping Syrskyi in his position would lead to serious demoralization of the armed forces and a complete disregard for the will of the people. According to him, the general's departure is a necessary step.

While the military leadership faces these serious challenges and internal turmoil, President Zelensky is simultaneously working on reorganizing the executive branch. In an attempt to stabilize the political situation, he nominated the head of the energy company Naftogaz as the country's new prime minister. However, the issue of military leadership remains the most pressing problem for the Ukrainian administration at the moment, requiring an urgent resolution.
