Earthquake of 4.7 Strikes Campi Flegrei — Major Landslide in Pozzuoli, Four Injured
A magnitude-4.7 quake at 19:46 triggered a landslide in Pozzuoli, damaged buildings and caused temporary service disruptions around Naples.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the Campi Flegrei region near Naples on 31 July 2026, causing large landslides, damage to buildings and temporary interruptions to the electricity supply. The tremor was felt across much of the western part of Naples and forced residents of several neighborhoods to go outside.
Measures taken and field reports
The quake was recorded at 19:46 local time, with the epicenter in the Campi Flegrei area at a depth of about three kilometers, the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported. Four people sustained minor injuries, emergency services in Italy confirmed.
The Italian fire service reported damage to buildings in Naples and its surroundings and informed of power outages in parts of the city. In the nearby town of Pozzuoli a large landslide was recorded that crushed cars and blocked streets.
As a precautionary measure, local rail and metro services were temporarily suspended. Italian media reported that the quake was one of the strongest ever recorded in this area, and videos circulated on social media showing residents running out into the streets in panic while the shaking continued.

Campi Flegrei is a densely populated volcanic caldera region that covers much of western Naples. In recent years there has been increased seismic activity there, prompting authorities to strengthen monitoring. Emergency response teams remained on site until late hours to carry out inspections and clear debris.
