Woman on Zakynthos faces €30,000 fine after allegedly strangling neighbour's cat

A woman on the Greek island of Zakynthos has been arrested and faces a fine of €30,000 after allegedly killing a cat that belonged to someone else, local authorities and animal welfare representatives said.

The suspect is a 63-year-old resident of the village of Romiri. The cat's owner reported the incident, leading to the woman's detention while police carry out an investigation.

Animal welfare group describes circumstances

The Animal Welfare Association of Zakynthos described the victim as an adult cat and said that, according to as-yet unconfirmed information, the woman strangled the animal with a rope. The motive for the attack has not been established.

The cat’s body is currently in the possession of its owner and will be kept in a refrigerator until the following day because of the holiday of Saint Dionysios, which is observed as a non-working day on Zakynthos.

Authorities have opened an inquiry and the investigation is ongoing; prosecutors and investigators will determine possible criminal and administrative penalties alongside the announced fine.
