Attack on August 20, 2026 damaged housing, broke windows at a children’s hospital and sparked fires across the capital; Poland carried out preventive air operations to protect its airspace.

On August 20, 2026, a large-scale Russian attack struck Kyiv, killing at least twelve people and wounding over 20, the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Klitschko posted the casualty figures on Telegram as emergency teams began search and rescue work in affected neighbourhoods.

Damage, fires and people trapped

Residential buildings and other structures were hit in several parts of the city. Klitschko said the blast wave shattered windows at a children’s hospital and that fires broke out at multiple locations following the strikes.

Local officials reported that a number of people became trapped — some inside shelters and others in a residential block where access was cut by damage. Power outages were reported in several urban districts as crews worked to restore services.

A witness told reporters that more than ten explosions were heard, and that both residential and commercial premises caught fire. Outside the capital, in the Brovary district surrounding Kyiv, the regional governor said one man was killed and another wounded. Those reports have not been independently verified.

Ukrainian authorities declared air-raid alerts in large parts of the country overnight. Ukraine’s air forces warned of incoming ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles moving toward Ukrainian territory. Both sides have stepped up strikes in recent months, with Russian forces increasingly using long-range weapons. Ukraine’s armed forces say they face shortages of anti-air missiles, complicating their ability to repel such attacks.

Responding to the cross-border danger, Poland said it undertook preventive military air operations to safeguard its own airspace, a measure announced by the Polish army on platform X.
