Zhito Luks marks 80 years since 1946, pairs tradition with modernisation

Zhito Luks this year celebrates a major milestone: 80 years since its founding in 1946, a span in which the company grew into one of the country’s leading producers of bread and flour and a household name in the domestic food industry.

The company took a decisive step toward modernization in 2001 when it became part of the international Elbisco group, a move that opened the door to new investments, upgraded production practices and access to broader know‑how.

Capacity, staff and investments

Today, the eight‑decade tradition stands on a modern production system and a workforce of 352 employees in 2025. Zhito Luks reports a milling capacity of 50,000 tonnes and five bread production lines; its distribution network serves around 3,000 customers daily. Over recent years the company has invested roughly €6 million in new equipment, automation and process improvements to raise efficiency while preserving its recipes and brands.

The product range has expanded from the traditional breads and flours of earlier generations to include toast breads, nutritious formulas and breads made from 100% whole grains, as well as sandwich and hamburger loaves, multiple types of flour, rusk and breadcrumbs and other mill and bakery products. Rusk is produced both for the domestic market and for export, and development activities include new rusk varieties aimed specifically at export categories.

Food quality and safety remain central to operations. In 2023 Zhito Luks obtained IFS Food certification from Quality Austria, a certificate that covers its complete production — standard and toast breads, specialty loaves, rusk and breadcrumbs. The company also applies ISO 22000, which integrates ISO 9001 and HACCP principles, and highlights ISO 14000 for environmental management and ISO 17025 for laboratory analyses. The IFS certificate is an important basis for cooperation with major European retail chains.

Along with investments and standards, the company emphasizes social responsibility: Zhito Luks regularly supports humanitarian and community initiatives. From 1946 to 2026 technologies and tastes have changed, the company says, but the goal remains the same — producing safe, high‑quality products that consumers trust while combining tradition with modern technology for the future.
