Why Did Madonna, Shakira, and Bieber Forgo Million-Dollar Fees for the World Cup?

A Spectacle Without Astronomical Fees

The FIFA World Cup culminated in an unforgettable halftime show during the final, where the stage was shared by some of today's biggest music icons. However, behind the dazzling performance of Madonna, Shakira, BTS, and Justin Bieber lies a surprising fact—none of these artists received a traditional performance fee for their participation.

Instead of cashing in on million-dollar paychecks, the megastars chose to donate their time and talent. According to information confirmed by the social impact organization Global Citizen, the initial trio of Madonna, Shakira, and BTS agreed to these terms from the very beginning. When Justin Bieber joined the lineup nearly two months later, he accepted the exact same model of engagement without a fixed fee.

The event organizers exclusively covered production and logistics costs, bypassing the artists' standard concert rates. Although a symbolic amount was paid for rehearsals, the details of individual contracts and the overall production budget remain a closely guarded secret by FIFA.

Music in the Service of Humanity

The primary goal of this extraordinary move is to support the FIFA Global Citizenship Education Fund. This initiative has an ambitious mission to raise $100 million, funds dedicated to expanding access to education and football programs for children around the globe. Even before the kickoff of the final match, the fund had already accumulated over $60 million, partly thanks to FIFA's decision to allocate one dollar from every ticket sold across all 104 matches of the tournament.

Shakira went a step further in her humanitarian mission. The Colombian star committed to donating all her royalties from the official World Cup song, titled "Dai Dai." Her publisher, Sony Music, joined the initiative with a pledge to match the first $250,000 raised through the track's release.

Complex Production and Commercial Support

In addition to the main stars, the stage featured appearances by Chris Martin, the PS22 chorus, conductor Gustavo Dudamel, as well as beloved characters from the Muppets and Sesame Street. The musical performance itself lasted approximately 11 minutes, but the entire halftime interval stretched to 27 minutes due to the complex logistics of installing and removing stage equipment from the football pitch.

To realize this grandiose project, the organization also relied on its commercial partners. These companies were given promotional space through branding and specific segments of the production itself, allowing the stars to focus on what matters most—sending a powerful message of solidarity through the universal language of music.
