17-year-old allegedly stabs 18-year-old on intercity bus near Smederevo

An alleged stabbing on an intercity bus between Smederevo and Velika Plana left an 18-year-old seriously injured last night. The attack took place on the bus near the steelworks’ second gate at about 18:30, and the suspect — a 17-year-old — fled the scene before being located and detained by police.

Police found the suspect several kilometres away and detained him

"The bus was near the second gate of the steelworks in Smederevo when the incident occurred, at around 18:30. Two teenagers argued, during which the 17-year-old stabbed the teenager who was one year older several times with a knife, after which he fled. With a rapid police intervention he was found several kilometres away and arrested, after which detention was ordered," a source close to the investigation said.

According to investigators, the 18-year-old sustained serious wounds to his arm and was also stabbed in the neck. Initial reports say his life is not in danger despite the severity of the injuries.

The suspect is from the Velika Plana area, while the injured young man is from the Smederevo area. Because the alleged attacker is a minor, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Smederevo has taken the lead on the case and formal proceedings will follow.

Authorities said they expect to establish the motive for the attack and the final legal classification of the offence once the prosecutor's office completes its investigation.
