71-year-old cyclist killed after collision with dog in Central Park

A 71-year-old cyclist died after colliding with a dog in Central Park early on the morning of October 6, 2026. The incident took place when a golden retriever that had been unleashed suddenly ran onto the roadway.

Crash details and response

The collision occurred around 8:20 a.m. near 84th Street. The force of the direct impact threw the rider over the handlebars and he landed on his head. Although he was wearing a protective helmet, he sustained fatal head and body injuries.

Emergency medical teams later confirmed his death after he was taken to hospital. The dog emerged from the crash uninjured, and the owner — who remained at the scene during the police investigation — was not reported to have been hurt.

Central Park has a designated leash-free window from 6 to 9 a.m., and because the collision occurred inside that time frame police said they do not expect criminal charges to be filed against the dog's owner. Park rules still require animals to be leashed when they are in close proximity to roadways.

Police also said the cyclist was not riding at excessive speed. The accident has revived public concern about safety on that stretch of the park near the Metropolitan Museum, where visitors and regulars describe the path as hazardous and sometimes hard to see around because of curves.

The crash follows another recent death on nearly the same section of path: a 41-year-old father of two was killed a few weeks earlier after a cyclist struck him at high speed while he was walking to work.
