Afrim Gashi calls for reflection and stronger institutions at 8 September reception
At the reception marking 8 September the Speaker said anniversaries should prompt learning from mistakes and efforts to build a more functional state.
Speaker of the Assembly Afrim Gashi used the reception held on 8 September to urge reflection on past achievements and to call for work toward a more functional state. The event brought together members of the first parliamentary assembly, current MPs and ministers, former prime ministers, ambassadors and many other guests.
Gashi said anniversaries should prompt honest assessment of what has been done and where more effort is needed to improve state institutions and services for future generations.
In his remarks he said: "I see anniversaries as a time and place for reflection, for learning where we have erred and how we can make this country better. Independence is a wonderful moment for not only politicians, but all social actors to consider what can be done to make things better for everyone," attributing the words to himself as Speaker of the Assembly.
Focus on institutions and equal application of the law
Gashi outlined his vision of the state of the future as one with functioning institutions where administration views citizens not as a burden but as the reason for its existence. He stressed that the law must be applied equally regardless of party affiliation and that corruption should be treated as a vice.
He also reiterated the shared European perspective as a common goal and invited political and social actors to use the anniversary moment to identify concrete priorities that would make public institutions more effective and responsive.
