Afrim Gashi Calls Early Mayoral Election in Brvenica
Vote set for 18 October 2026 after the sudden June death of Mayor Jovica Ilievski.
Afrim Gashi, Speaker of the Assembly, today announced that early mayoral elections in the Municipality of Brvenica will be held on 18 October 2026, following the sudden death of Mayor Jovica Ilievski in June.
"Today, in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Code and applicable laws, I signed the decision to call early elections for the mayor of the Municipality of Brvenica, which will be held on 18 October 2026," Gashi said.
Gashi asked the State Election Commission, the Municipal Election Commission of Brvenica and all other bodies responsible for carrying out the decision to run the electoral process professionally, impartially and in full compliance with the law and procedures.
The announcement closes the formal steps required to set the ballot date after the municipality was left without a mayor when Jovica Ilievski died unexpectedly in June. Authorities have not announced a new date for any memorial or administrative events related to his passing.
With the date fixed, political parties and local groups now have a timetable to prepare candidate lists and campaign activities ahead of the October vote.
The Assembly’s decision to publish the date follows provisions in national legislation that require a timetable for by-elections when an executive local official's position becomes vacant.
