Alberto Gilardino has been appointed head coach of Parma. The 44-year-old signed a contract running until the end of the 2026/27 season, with an option to extend for a further two years.
Return to a familiar club
Gilardino returns to the club where he played between 2002 and 2005, a period in which he scored 56 goals in 116 appearances. His playing years at Parma established him as one of the club’s most recognisable forwards.
The former Italy international was part of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad. Since retiring as a player, he has built a managerial résumé that includes spells at Rezzato, Pro Vercelli, Genoa and Pisa.
Gilardino takes over from Carlos Cuesta, after the club ended its cooperation with Cuesta on 27 September. The change brings Gilardino back to Parma, this time tasked with guiding the team from the touchline rather than the attack.
The appointment marks the club’s latest attempt to stabilise results by turning to a figure closely linked with Parma’s recent history on the pitch. The new coach inherits a squad familiar with the club’s traditions and expectations.
Officials confirmed the contract terms on 29 September 2026, and supporters will watch the coming weeks to see how Gilardino translates his playing legacy into coaching results at Parma.
