Aleksandar Vučić to resign on 27 September, will join election campaign
Vučić will step down after returning from the UN in New York and plans to campaign for the 25 October early parliamentary elections.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced he will submit his resignation from the presidency on 27 September and immediately enter the campaign for early parliamentary elections scheduled for 25 October.
Speaking on Radio Belgrade, Vučić said he will tender the resignation on Sunday, 27 September, shortly after returning from New York where he will attend the United Nations General Assembly. He added that he wants to free the presidential office quickly so that the next acting president, Ana Brnabić, can assume duties without delay.
Timing and the campaign
Vučić said he is proud of his record as president and that he served his country faithfully, loyally and honestly. He has already signalled his intention to join the race as an ordinary citizen and to lead the campaign for the list registered for 25 October.
He also promised major personnel changes if the political bloc he leads wins voter support. "If we win the trust of the citizens, there will be big changes: a government with at most 12 ministers," Vučić said.
The Republic Electoral Commission has officially accepted the electoral list "Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia" for the 25 October vote. Earlier in September, Vučić stated he intends to run for prime minister and, should he secure backing after the elections, to form what he called "the smallest government in the history of Serbia."
