Široki’s American player reported as migrant while training in Kočerin

An American player for Široki was briefly the subject of a police report after a local resident mistook his early‑morning run for suspicious activity, the club’s away preparations were interrupted by an odd misunderstanding ahead of the team’s ABA League trip to Crvena Zvezda.

Training in Kočerin, alarm among neighbours

Chavon Daniel Lewis was running alone around 7:00 a.m. in the village of Kočerin, near Široki Brijeg, when someone phoned authorities thinking the runner was a migrant, an Instagram post by the community page Kočerin Parish Hamlet Tournament said.

"In fact, one person was observed running along the newly built sidewalk in the early morning hours and someone immediately thought that such an action should be reported to the police," the post reads.

The timing was linked to Široki’s match in the ABA League: the sixth‑round game at Crvena Zvezda is scheduled for Sunday, 1 November, at 13:00. Lewis had been doing individual work before the team’s trip.

Lewis, born in 1993 in New York, is 196 centimetres tall and is described as a defensive specialist; he joined Široki in summer 2026. He studied at Marist University and began his professional career in 2015 with Lithuanian Juventus. His CV also lists stops in Poland, Estonia, Russia, Israel, Venezuela, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates — including Kalev, Nizhny Novgorod, Yenisey, Hapoel Galil Elyon and Ironi Kiryat Ata — and he arrived at Široki from Polish side Zielona Góra.

Club staff treated the incident as a local curiosity and did not report any formal complaint; Lewis continued normal preparations with the squad ahead of the weekend fixture.
