Anton Grunis confirmed dead after Putin decorated him for Kostyantynivka

The Ministry of Defence of Russia has confirmed the death of Major-General Anton Grunis, a commander who President Vladimir Putin recently decorated with the country’s highest state award for the capture of the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostyantynivka.

Major-General Apti Alaudinov, deputy head of the ideological branch at the Ministry of Defence and commander of the Akhmat special forces, announced Grunis’s passing and said the general “went to another world.”

Command praise, few details

In his brief statement Alaudinov added: “He left us as a hero who fulfilled his sacred duty.” He did not provide any specifics about the time or circumstances of Grunis’s death.

The announcement follows the recent decoration by President Vladimir Putin that honored Grunis for his role in taking Kostyantynivka, a town in eastern Ukraine. Officials have not released additional information about the general’s service record or the exact location where he died.

The Ministry of Defence’s confirmation and Alaudinov’s words are the first official acknowledgements of the death. Independent verification and further details have not yet been published.
