Boban Utkovski resigns as director of Skopje Prison
Resignation delivered to the Government and to be considered at an upcoming cabinet session; Utkovski cited personal reasons.
Boban Utkovski, the director of the Skopje Prison (KPU "Skopje"), has submitted his resignation, he told TV 24. Utkovski said he stepped down for personal reasons; the resignation has already been delivered to the Government and will be examined at one of the coming cabinet sessions.
Background and timing
Utkovski was appointed acting director of the Skopje prison at the end of July 2024. His tenure included several public statements about security at the facility that attracted attention.
One of his recent remarks came after former deputy prime minister Artan Grubi was placed under house arrest. Utkovski said: "The 'Skopje' prison is not a Mexican cartel, it can guarantee the safety of every inmate, even of the former deputy prime minister Artan Grubi." Prosecutors had justified Grubi's house arrest by stating that the Ministry of Interior (MVR) and the National Security Agency (ANB) assessed he was not secure in Shutka.
The administration of the prison and the Government have not announced a timeline for choosing a successor; the formal acceptance and any personnel decisions will depend on the agenda of the next government meeting.
Utkovski confirmed his resignation to TV 24 but declined to provide additional details beyond citing personal reasons.
