Bulgarian Foreign Ministry summons North Macedonia diplomat after MP Angel Georgiev denied entry
Bulgarian Foreign Ministry sought explanation after Angel Georgiev was refused entry on 27 September while en route to a Kočani court hearing.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the acting head of the Republic of North Macedonia's mission in Sofia after Bulgarian MP Angel Georgiev was denied entry to North Macedonia on 27 September.
According to the Foreign Ministry's request at the meeting, Bulgarian diplomats asked for an explanation for the refusal to admit Georgiev, noting that the lawmaker had previously entered North Macedonia without difficulty for the same purpose.
Bulgarian officials said Georgiev had planned to attend a court hearing in the ongoing case against Iva Mihailova in Kočani when he was turned away at the border on 27 September.
Diplomatic concerns raised
The Bulgarian side said that "the actions taken by the Macedonian side are considered provocative."
The acting head of mission was called into the ministry in Sofia to provide clarification; Bulgarian officials framed the meeting as a demand for answers about the incident and its motives.
