BYD recalls 183,211 Qin and Tang vehicles in China over brake‑pedal stopper defect
Recall in China covers vehicles produced 2014–2022; defective brake‑pedal stopper can leave brake lights on and pose a traffic hazard.
Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD has started a recall of 183,211 cars from its Qin and Tang lineups in China after regulators found a defective brake-pedal stopper that can crack and cause the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the pedal is not pressed. The action, announced on 18 September, covers vehicles produced between 2014 and 2022; BYD says affected parts will be replaced free of charge through authorised dealers in China.
Which cars are included
The recall covers 142,895 vehicles from the Tang family and 40,316 vehicles from the Qin family. The Tang portion includes examples built between 28 March 2015 and 21 December 2018, 77,846 Tang DM models produced from 19 May 2018 to 14 January 2022, and 7,023 Tang EV models made between 27 December 2018 and 25 October 2021. The Qin vehicles were produced from 27 June 2014 to 9 June 2019.
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said a material defect in a batch of brake-pedal stoppers can lead to cracking and part damage after prolonged use; in extreme cases the stopper may fully detach.
The regulator noted the defect can leave the brake lights illuminated even when the driver is not pressing the brake pedal. That behaviour can send a misleading signal to drivers following behind, who might assume the car ahead is slowing or braking, creating a potential safety risk — the reason the recall was initiated.
BYD has stated that owners of affected vehicles will receive the improved replacement part at no cost. Vehicles that already received the upgraded component do not need to be re-serviced solely because the recall was announced. The company also emphasised the issue is unrelated to the vehicle’s traction battery.
So far, available information refers to a recall implemented in China only; there is no confirmation that the same action applies to BYD cars in Europe or Serbia. Owners outside China should not assume their vehicle is included until local authorities or BYD representatives announce a corresponding measure for their market.
