Four Renoir works worth €9 million stolen from museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer
Mayor Bryan Masson said two people broke into the museum early; two paintings were left during the suspects' escape.
Four works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir valued at a total of €9 million were stolen from the museum dedicated to the French Impressionist in Cagnes-sur-Mer, in southern France, Mayor Bryan Masson announced.
The mayor said the theft was carried out by two people; during their escape they left two of the stolen paintings behind.
Police response and ongoing probe
“This morning, two people broke into the Renoir Museum and stole four works of art. The museum alarm was activated at 5:48 and only five minutes later our municipal police were on the scene. Captured by the town's surveillance cameras, the two people fled. The perpetrators are actively sought, and the investigation is ongoing,” Masson said.
According to Masson’s account, municipal police arrived within minutes of the alarm. Footage from the town’s surveillance system recorded the suspects as they fled the scene. Investigators are continuing their enquiries and the perpetrators remain at large.
