Today the Venerable Martyr Dometij is commemorated

Today the Christian calendar remembers the venerable martyr Dometij, an ascetic whose life, according to tradition, began in Persia during the reign of Emperor Constantine. Born to a pagan family, he embraced the Christian faith as a young man and received baptism.

Monastic calling and austere life

After his conversion he renounced worldly ties and entered monastic life at a community near the city of Nisibis. Seeking deeper solitude, he later retired to the care of an archimandrite named Nurvel, a figure reputed to have “for sixty years not eaten anything cooked.”

Nurvel ordained him to the rank of deacon, and when there was pressure to raise him to the priesthood, Dometij retreated to a desert cave to live as a hermit. Through fasting, prayer, vigil and contemplation he is said to have reached such spiritual depth that he became known for healing the sick.

When Julian the Apostate entered those regions he learned of Dometij and ordered men to seal the cave, entombing him alive together with his two disciples. That is how this holy man’s earthly life ended in 363, and the tradition says he passed into God’s Kingdom.

The remembrance of Dometij has been part of local liturgical calendars for centuries; believers honour his memory as an example of ascetic devotion and martyrdom.
