Dino Bešlić on the anniversary of Halid Bešlić’s death: "This was his wish"

Exactly one year after Halid Bešlić’s death, his son Dino Bešlić spoke about the private man behind the public legend and the lessons that continue to guide the family.

Halid was born on 20 November 1953 in Knežina and began singing while still in primary school. Over a long career he became one of the defining voices of the region’s folk music, and his humanitarian work — performing at more than 500 benefit concerts during the wars — is remembered alongside his songs.

“He never pretended”

Dino told how his father stayed the same person offstage as he was in front of audiences. “He never pretended. The person the public saw on stage was the same one we knew at home. He didn't change whether he was sitting with directors or with ordinary people. He was always the same; he gave everyone equal respect, without distinction. The only things we shared were some everyday rituals, like watching favourite TV series. In the city, on stage, and at home he was exactly the same,” explains Dino Bešlić.

Speaking about the year since his father’s passing, Dino described the time as painfully short and emotionally overwhelming. “This has been the worst year of my life. Not only did it pass quickly, it felt like it happened in a single moment. Because of my father and my mother. Everything is like a dream; you know it's true, yet you're not fully aware of it. Whoever hasn't experienced this cannot describe it. I may appear strong in life, but when I come home I fall apart and lose myself like a child. It's very hard for me. Everything passed unrealistically quickly,” he said candidly.

Beyond songs and memories, Dino said the most enduring inheritance from his father is a set of moral rules: honesty, dignity and responsibility. “He always told me: be honest, don't promise too much. Whatever you promise, always fulfill it for your honour, but let honesty be your first priority. Value it, respect yourself and don't give away your honour for anything in the world. That's what I will pass on to my children,” he concluded.

For Dino and the rest of the family, Halid Bešlić’s public legacy remains visible in recordings and concerts, while his private instructions continue to shape how his children remember and live by his name.
