Jimmy Butler could return to play around the New Year

Jimmy Butler could be back on the basketball court around the New Year — possibly in January or February 2027 — if his recovery from a serious right-knee injury continues to progress as planned.

The 36-year-old has been gradually increasing his on-court workload and so far has not experienced setbacks in rehabilitation. Medical staff stress, however, that several important phases remain in the return-to-play process, which makes the January–February window an optimistic estimate rather than a certainty.

Team taking cautious approach

Butler suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in January 2026, which ended his season. The organization has signalled it does not want to rush his comeback and is prioritizing long-term health over a fast return.

Medical director Rick Cellini, known for a careful, conservative approach to rehabilitating injured players, will monitor Butler’s progress closely. That cautious philosophy means the timetable can be adjusted depending on how Butler moves through the remaining stages of recovery.

If recovery continues without complication, the team could consider reintegrating Butler in early 2027. Until then, staff will continue to increase his activity in measured steps and evaluate him at each milestone.
