Long queues at southern border as holidaymakers return from Greece

Thousands of people returning from Greece faced long waits at border crossings as the extended holiday weekend ended, with social media full of videos and photos showing kilometer-long queues to enter North Macedonia.

Many holidaymakers spent the three consecutive non-working days surrounding the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Uspenie) at beaches and resorts in Greece and returned on Sunday evening, when traffic concentrated on the southern border crossings.

Border checks and official response

The Ministry of Internal Affairs said it is carrying out the required border checks and that all available human and technical capacities have been mobilized to speed up passenger flows.

"At the Dojran border crossing in the past 24 hours, 2 876 Macedonian citizens entered the country, and 1 181 Macedonian citizens exited. As for foreign citizens, in the same period 1 593 entered our country, and 908 persons left our country," the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

At the Bogorodica crossing, the ministry reported that 2 040 Macedonian citizens entered the country and 3 116 exited; the number of foreign passengers who entered in the same period amounted to 7 632, while 4 280 left the country.

The Auto‑Moto Association of Macedonia (AMSM) also warned of increased vehicle frequency at some border checkpoints and advised drivers to be patient and to respect traffic rules. ([amsm.mk](https://amsm.mk/sostojba-na-patishta/?utm_source=openai))
