Drama in Prilep: Activists block cutting of century-old maple at Kocho Racin school

Dozens of Prilep residents and activists from the initiatives Zelena narodna strazha and Spas za Prilep returned yesterday morning to protect a century-old maple in the yard of Kocho Racin school after the school director requested the tree be cut, saying "so that children do not slip on the leaves."

One of the two maples was already removed at the school administration's request, and activists say municipal crews arrived again to cut the remaining old tree. More than 10 police officers were present when the crews came, according to witnesses.

Activists describe the tree as healthy and vital for shade

Representatives of the environmental initiative published a video from the scene and criticized the explanation given for felling the tree. They pointed out that the decision itself notes the maple is entirely healthy and does not pose immediate danger, yet authorities decided to remove it "to avoid future harm."

In their statement the activists said the justification contradicts common sense: "Cutting down a 100-year-old healthy and large tree that produces oxygen and provides shade in summer heat is madness."

Members of Zelena narodna strazha also addressed the decision-makers directly: "Whom are you defending and against whom are you standing? Think carefully. Withdraw your decision and stop playing with the people!"
