Drone exploded on Bulgarian soil near Romanian border, says Rumen Radev
The prime minister said the unmanned aircraft entered Bulgaria's airspace and detonated about 100 metres from the border.
A drone entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded on Bulgarian soil close to the border with Romania, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said.
"The drone exploded on Bulgarian territory, about 100 metres from the Romanian border," Radev said after a meeting of the government's security council in Sofia.
Radev's statement reiterated that the incident occurred within Bulgaria's borders; Bulgaria is a member of NATO and the European Union. He offered the information immediately after the security council meeting but did not provide further operational details in his brief remarks.
Regional security implications
The apparent detonation so near an international frontier will be watched closely by neighbouring states and Brussels given Bulgaria's alliance and EU ties. The prime minister presented the incident as a security matter during the session of the government's security council in Sofia.
Authorities in Sofia said the event took place roughly 100 metres from the Romanian line; Radev addressed reporters following the council meeting to relay the basic facts. Further updates are expected as the situation is examined by state services.
