Duplantis wins in Lausanne, narrowly misses breaking his own world record

Armand Duplantis won the pole vault at Athletissima in Lausanne on August 20, 2026, clearing 6.21 metres but falling narrowly short in a bid to top his own world record.

The Swedish star, who holds Olympic, world and European titles, cleared 6.21 m to take first place at the 12th meet of this season's Diamond League in Lausanne. After that, he attempted 6.32 m — one centimetre higher than the world record he set on 12 March this year in his hometown of Uppsala — but did not make the height.

Near miss on an ambitious target

Duplantis then raised the bar to 6.32 m, a mark that would have eclipsed his own record from March, but the jumps did not stick. Greek vaulter Emmanouil Karalis finished second with a best of 6.16 m.

Reflecting on the competition Duplantis said: "I'm tired. This was an incredible competition, I really had to raise things to the next level."

The rest of the programme at Athletissima is scheduled for tomorrow.
