Two Syrian nationals suspected of setting fire to door at Novi Zagreb reception centre
A 22-year-old and a 29-year-old allegedly set a room door on fire after complaining about their lodging; charges were lodged for endangering life and property.
Two Syrian nationals, aged 22 and 29, are suspected of setting fire to the door of a room at the Reception Centre for Applicants for International Protection in Novi Zagreb after expressing dissatisfaction with their accommodation. The incident took place on Friday, police said.
Police say open flame was used
Zagreb Police (PU Zagreb) suspect the men ignited the room door using an open flame in a manner that has not yet been determined. Authorities say the act created a danger to the lives of other applicants for international protection and centre staff, as well as to the building and property.
Following the criminal investigation, both suspects were handed over to the custody supervisor. A criminal complaint has been filed with the competent state prosecutor on suspicion of committing the criminal offence of "endangering life and property by generally dangerous act or means."
The reception centre where the incident occurred houses people seeking international protection in Croatia. Police statements indicate investigative steps are ongoing and further procedural measures will depend on the prosecutor's office.
The police announcement was released on August 2, 2026. No additional information about the suspects' identities or the exact method used to set the fire has been made public so far.
