Two‑ingredient overnight fix for cracked heels
A sugar-and‑Vaseline scrub softens and seals heels in three simple steps — soak, scrub, seal.

Hot, dusty weather and open shoes can leave the skin on your heels dry, thickened and sometimes painfully split. Before you book an expensive pedicure or buy a pricey cream, a simple home ritual using two household ingredients offers a gentle alternative.
What you need and why it works
The recipe is minimal: sugar and Vaseline. Sugar acts as a mild natural exfoliant to remove dead surface cells, while Vaseline (petroleum jelly) creates an occlusive layer that locks in moisture and nourishes the deeper skin layers.
Start by soaking your feet in lukewarm water for about 10 minutes so the skin softens — avoid hot water because it can further dry the skin. Pat your feet dry, then combine a small spoonful of sugar with enough Vaseline to form a slightly gritty paste.
Gently massage the mixture into the rough areas using light circular motions for a few minutes. Take care not to rub aggressively, especially if you have fresh or deep cracks.
Rinse off the scrub, apply a thin layer of plain Vaseline and put on clean cotton socks. Leaving the Vaseline on overnight improves the effect as the skin repairs while you sleep.
Avoid aggressive filing or harsh scrubbing — those tactics can irritate the skin and worsen the problem. If cracks are deep, bleeding, look infected, or cause severe pain that doesn’t improve with home care, see a dermatologist.
For ordinary dry heels, the secret is persistence: a few minutes of gentle care before bed, repeated regularly, can make a visible difference without special treatments.
