One killed in overnight Russian strikes on Kyiv

One person was killed in overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, the State Emergency Service (DSNS) reported.

Damage and local response

In the Dnipro district, a building was partially destroyed and caught fire; rescuers at the scene found the body of the person who died. Windows of a residential block and several parked cars were also damaged at two locations within the same district.

In the Darnytskyi district, fires broke out in non-residential buildings. Warehouses and the roof of a derelict building were struck, according to local officials.

"In the Darnytskyi district, warehouse buildings were hit. A fire broke out," Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

City authorities said emergency services were dispatched to all affected sites. A few hours before the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that intelligence had information about preparations for new Russian ballistic-missile strikes and urged Western allies to speed up deliveries of Patriot air-defence missiles.

The strike on Kyiv follows attacks across Ukraine the previous day that, Ukrainian authorities say, killed at least 20 people and injured 109. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said there had been an attempt overnight to strike the Russian capital with Ukrainian drones, calling it one of the largest such incidents this year; he said 862 unmanned aerial vehicles were sent to the Moscow region from last night into the morning.
