One dead in five-vehicle crash on Croatian highway

A severe collision on a Croatian highway involving five vehicles — two lorries and three cars — left one person dead and brought traffic to a standstill, authorities and eyewitnesses reported.

According to witnesses at the scene, one of the lorries struck the rear of a car with its tractor unit; the car was crushed by the force of the impact and dragged beneath the truck. Another lorry with a crane was stopped immediately beside the wreckage. Emergency services were present, and vehicles were halted for kilometres.

Wrong-way driving through the emergency corridor

After the crash, traffic came to a complete halt and a backlog formed that eyewitnesses estimated at around eight kilometres. While vehicles were stopped, a car with Slovenian registration plates drove the wrong way through the corridor set aside for emergency services.

"I am in a convoy because of a traffic accident between the Most Sava intersection and the Zagreb East interchange. One car started driving in the opposite direction through the emergency lane," a reader who filmed the scene posted.

Photos from the site show a silver Mercedes with Slovenian plates moving against the flow through the narrow space between stationary vehicles. Nearby, ambulances and other emergency crews were visible attending the crash.

Police and rescue teams closed the motorway to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the collision. The identity of the person who died has not been released publicly.
