Staro Aerodrom and Michurin to become one-way; 415 parking spaces and bike lanes planned
Municipality of Aerodrom says Vladimir Komarov and Simeon Kavrakirov streets will become one-way to free space for parking and bike lanes.
The Municipality of Aerodrom has launched a project to introduce a new traffic regime in the Michurin and Staro Aerodrom neighbourhoods that will convert two streets — Vladimir Komarov and Simeon Kavrakirov — to one-way operation, the mayor Dejan Miteski announced on social media.
According to the plan, converting the two streets to one-way will free space for dedicated bicycle lanes and create room for additional parking. "With the new regime we will enable better and more efficient use of the street space, with more organized vehicle movement and creation of additional space for parking and for bicycle traffic," Mayor Dejan Miteski said.
How many parking spaces and the next steps
The municipality estimates the changes will allow for roughly 200 new parking spaces in Staro Aerodrom and about 215 in Michurin, a total of 415 additional spots. The scheme also envisions a 30 km/h speed limit on the travel lane where the one-way regime is introduced.
Earlier discussions in August identified this one-way arrangement as an idea to ease chronic parking pressure in the area. The current design phase is planned to last 30 days; after that the completed project will be submitted to the City of Skopje and the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the necessary approvals. Implementation timing will depend on those subsequent approvals.
In a municipal statement explaining the layout, officials said: "One-way traffic in parts of the Staro Aerodrom and Michurin neighbourhoods will run with one marked lane for parking and another for movement limited to 30 km/h. This strategy brings three key benefits: more parking spaces, the possibility of introducing new bicycle lanes on sections of road where width allows it, and safer traffic with reduced speeds."
On whether the 415 new parking spaces will be free or subject to paid zone parking, the Municipality of Aerodrom said it will carry out a resident survey and decide on zonal parking based on the results and consultations with local residents.
