Emaculate Vandera Blazhevska and Janko from Colombia sing Macedonian songs for Independence Day
A Kenyan-born influencer in Skopje and a Colombian musician from Bogotá performed traditional Macedonian songs that resonated online.
Two foreign performers — Emaculate Vandera Blazhevska (Ema), a Kenyan-born influencer based in Skopje, and Janko Bogdan Penjafort Vilja (known as Janko the Colombian) — marked North Macedonia's Independence Day with heartfelt renditions of Macedonian songs that stirred reactions online.
Sitting behind the wheel of her car, Vandera Blazhevska recorded an emotional version of the classic "Biser balkanski" and greeted the country on the holiday. She addressed viewers with the words: "Happy birthday, Macedonia! May she be eternal and free!".
Small gestures, wide response
From Bogotá, Janko performed the patriotic anthem "Nema druga Makedonija" accompanied by his band VardarAndi, using his trademark whistle and a full-band arrangement. The song — long associated with the late Vojo Stojanoski — was received warmly by Macedonian listeners abroad and at home.
Both performers have built strong ties to the country: Vandera Blazhevska has lived in Skopje for several years, recently celebrated obtaining Macedonian citizenship, and often shares her appreciation for local traditions. She met her husband Mihajlo in Thailand; the two are parents to a daughter, Darija.
Janko, meanwhile, earned admiration in the region for previous performances of Macedonian folk songs and for his collaboration on stage with Macedonian artists, including a noted appearance with Vlatko Miladinovski.
The reactions on social platforms ranged from surprise to gratitude — many viewers praised the sincerity of two foreigners who sing and celebrate Macedonian melodies with evident affection.
