Erik ten Hag warns Manchester United face relegation threat

Erik ten Hag has sounded a stark warning that Manchester United could realistically be dragged into a relegation battle in the unusually competitive Premier League. The former United manager argued the level of opposition this season means a prolonged slump can quickly turn into a season-defining crisis.

Poor form, slim margin to the drop

Ten Hag offered his assessment after United’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea, a result that left Michael Carrick’s side sitting 17th with just seven points from nine league games. United are separated from Crystal Palace — currently inside the relegation zone — only by a superior goal difference.

The club are enduring a run of nine matches without a victory in all competitions, a streak Opta records as their longest since 1984. Ten Hag warned that in a league where every team is strong, a negative spiral can be dangerous.

"In the Premier League it is certainly possible because all the teams are simply strong. If you once find yourself on the wrong side and fall into a negative spiral, then the situation can become very, very difficult," Ten Hag told ESPN.

United’s board nevertheless kept faith with Carrick ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge, despite heavy recent reversals including a 0-3 home defeat by Bournemouth and a 1-4 loss to Como in the Champions League.

Ten Hag, who arrived at United in 2022 and ended the club’s years-long trophy drought before being dismissed in 2024, compared the current situation to his era in charge. "Before our arrival they had not won a trophy for six years. And look where they are now," he said. Ten Hag has recently been appointed technical director of FC Twente.

United now face two pivotal home fixtures: Roma visit Old Trafford on Tuesday in the Champions League, followed by a Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Sunday. Carrick must arrest the slump quickly if United are to move away from the relegation zone and restore confidence within the squad.
